Chapter I
Introduction
1.1 Introduction
We
know that belles-lettres is not always for pleasure but also for education,
this ascertainable in one of belles-lettres like in novel that showed by any
elements which made the reader can get the lesson on belles-lettres like novel.
Jane
Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is novel which writes at eighteen forty seven when in
this era many poets of romantic poet which make a belles-lettres with genre romantic.
Bronte also writes a novel Jane Eyre which the genre is romantic. Bronte is
different with the other poets that Bronte mixing between romantic and feminism
in Jane Eyre’s novel. I want to explore Jane Eyre’s novel in romantic and
feminist in Jane Eyre’s novel.
1.2 Background
Charlotte
Bronte wrote Jane Eyre with many elements in this novel. I found the romantic
and feminist elements in Jane Eyre’s novel which many showed by Bronte.
Romantic novel itself is one of genre novel which focus to relationship between
two people and I know that is focus in love and feminist itself is had hardly
begun to articulate, let alone address, women’s special problems: issues to do
with childbirth and child-rearing, or the strain on women who had to combine
housework and/or childcare with work outside the home.
Romantic
genre in Jane Eyre is showed by Eyre and Rochester which falling in love and
Bronte showing the difficult way to get the happiness of Eyre with she have to
be a feminist and the education when she grew up is made she become a feminist.

era have a particular affinity for winds, for the inspiration of the spirit of
nature.(Ferber: 2007; 136)
Romantic
view is that nature governs our most human feelings, our imaginations, and our
hearts. (Ferber: 2007; 237)
Romantic
ideas are also used to argue against the cultural materialist view of
literature as merely a form of ideology.(Bowie: 2002; 2)
Romantic
conception art can be regarded as reconciling in the realm of appearance what
is unreconciled in reality, and thus as a form of ideology. Art does so,
though, because it grants freedom to the imagination, allowing it to move
beyond the world of what there is to a world of as yet unrealized possibility.

Feminists
had hardly begun to articulate, let alone address, women’s special problems:
issues to do with childbirth and child-rearing, or the strain on women who had
to combine housework and/or childcare with work outside the home. Walters (2005;
2)
In
feminism, Walters (2005; 2) argued that woman was fighting the tyranny of the
patriarchal state as you are fighting the tyranny of the Fascist state.
Walters
(2005; 2) adding her argument that over the centuries, and in many different
countries, women have spoken out for their sex, and articulated, in different
ways, their complaints, their needs, and their hopes. Its mean that woman every
country needs equality with man.
Walter
(2005; 21) argued that woman are kept like birds in cages to hop up and down in
our houses, not suffered to fly abroad ... we are shut out of all power and
authority, by reason we are never employed either in civil or martial affairs,
our counsels are despised and laughed at, the best of our actions are trodden
down with scorn, by the overweening conceit men have of themselves and through
despisement of us.
Hook
(2000; 48) said that the emphasis on work as the key to women's liberation led
many white feminist activists to suggest women who worked were ‘already
liberated.'
Walters
(2005; 3) added that women also have to expose and eradicate the misogyny
inherent in feminism itself.

II
Analysis
1. Romantic
in Novel Jane Eyre
Romantic
in Jane Eyre is one of important element, because in this novel focus on romantic
genre. It talking about two human who falling in love with Jane who is age is
eighteen years old and Mr. Rochester is thirty years old. Bronte make the
character very interesting for me because with differences of age which very
different.
This
novel if I look from the plot, this novel is not really different with another
novel, but I think the smarter of Bronte who make the character and the thing
which mixing the romantic and feminist.
This
novel is clearly has a genre romantic because this novel is writes at eighteen
century that in this era is the era of romantic poets. Bronte also I think is
romantic poet because he write Jane Eyre with romantic genre.
‘Ten you are mistaken and you know
nothing about me, and nothing about the sort of love of which I am capable.
Every atom of your fesh is as dear to me as my own: in pain and sickness it
would still be dear. (P.459)
That
citation can take the conclusion that in phrase “in pain and sickness it would still be dear” was showing that this
novel include to romantic, because that phrase drawing that love not only give
when the beloved is in well person but also can accept when is not again in be
well person.
Romantic
is make for make the imagination beyond the world because with love we can
imagine about everything although that is yet unrealized possibility like Bowie
(2002; 15) said that romantic conception art can be regarded as reconciling in

About
romantic, romantic it is one of genre novel which focus to relationship between
two people. This is showing by Bronte with Jane who give her affection when she
at reformatory to her best friend.
“‘I am very happy, Jane; and when
you hear that I am dead, you must be sure and not grieve: there is nothing to
grieve about. We all must die one day, and the illness which is removing me is
not painful; it is gentle and gradual: my mind is at rest.”(P.123)
That citation show that Bronte not
only want to explore love as man an woman affection, but also love with best
friend like in that citation. That citation is very beautiful because Bronte
drawing the love with very impressive. The love is represented by Bronte with
showing that with love, die also be beautiful thing.
Romantic era have a particular

136) its mean that the nature is represent a peacefulness of human needs that human was bored with
materialist and bored become materialist.

That citation it’s mean that nature
or forest as the nature is give a peacefulness to the “crowded schoolroom” I
think Bronte want to say that nature can giving the peacefulness of the boring
life that represent with “crowded schoolroom”.
The romantic always represent with a
nature. Romantic is create is solution
of boring in life, like the world was crowded with the machine, was dirty with
pollution and anymore, so that’s the reason why romantic is created, because
human miss peacefulness like in the nature or forest.
The whole looked, as the host of
the Rochester Arms had said, ‘quite a desolate spot.’ It was as still as a
church on a week-day: the pattering rain on the forest leaves was the only
sound audible in its vicinage. (Pg.657)
That
citation is represent that Rochester need a peacefulness so he just look the
nature which drew by the pattering rain on the forest leaves, and the sound of
that is giving a peacefulness of Rochester heart. Ferber (2007; 237) said that
romantic view is that nature governs our most human feelings, our imaginations,
and our hearts. This is same like Bronte whom drawing the romantic with the
nature and drawing the character that need peacefulness with the nature.
2. Feminist
in Novel Jane Eyre
Another
element in Jane Eyre is feminist character which creates by Bronte to mixing
the story for make a complex the problem. In feminism, Walters (2005; 2) argued
that woman was fighting the tyranny of the patriarchal state as you are fighting
the tyranny of the Fascist state, and Eyre is created by Bronte for showing
that she against the fighting the tyranny of the fascist state that doing by her
foster brother.
I did so, not at first aware what
was his intention; but when I saw him lift and poise the book and stand in act
to hurl it, I instinctively started aside with a cry of alarm: not soon enough,
however; the volume was flung, it hit me, and I fell, striking my head against
the door and cutting it.(Pg. 12)
That citation was showed that in
began story Bronte was showed the feminist with Jane hit her foster brother
when he hit before by her foster brother until the foster brother blooding and
he crying with hit of woman. It was showing that woman also against the
unbalancing situation when woman have to deferred by man.
Walter

This room was chill,
because it seldom had a fire; it was silent, because remote from the nursery
and kitchen; solemn, because it was known to be so seldom entered. Te
house-maid alone came here on Saturdays, to wipe from the mirrors and the
furniture a week’s quiet dust. (Pg. 17)
That
citation is when woman in one room that quiet, silent, alone have to wipe the
mirror ant the furniture a week’s quiet dusk, moreover woman is can doing
something like man or why Bronte didn’t make a man character for wipe the
mirror or doing something like that. It can represent that woman still of man
feet, because woman always obey the man.
Feminist
is against woman of unbalance situation between man and woman, woman just have
to stay at home but man can go to where he want. Woman against this situation
but woman is a woman that more good in using heart not reason, but Bronte still
draw the feminist with woman power to
showed that man also weak. Walters (2005; 2) adding her argument that over the
centuries, and in many different countries, women have spoken out for their
sex, and articulated, in different ways, their complaints, their needs, and
their hopes. Its mean that woman every country needs equality with man.
‘Wicked
and cruel boy!’ I said. ‘You are like a murderer; you are like a slave driver you
are like the Roman emperors!’ (Pg. 12)
That
citation is when Eyre is talking with angry to her foster brother and Bronte I
think want to show that if feminism is talking like that woman will say. Woman
will say that man is like murderer, man is like the Roman Emperors.
Chapter III
Conclusion
Romantic novel always give a happy effect to the reader because
always give happy ending in the end of the story. Jane Eyre’s novel also is
good novel that Bronte wrote. Bronte drawing the love with colorful like he not
always drawing the love man to woman but also affection to friend or best
friend.
Feminist in Jane Eyre’s novel also represent that woman
is always be woman that more using her heart than the reason. Although Eyre is
strong woman but she still crying not likes man or Rochester, although his
hearth is totally broken he never crying. That was showed that woman is never
will be equal with man although feminist purpose is become equal with man.
Finally, Jane Eyre’s Novel is great novel that drawing
of romantic and feminist. Two elements that make novel Jane Eyre is unusual not
like short movie in television, but Bronte is drawing about love that different
with another poet and although in the end feminist still not drawing equal yet.
